About The Friends of Camp Agawm
Camp Agawam is a 140-acre recreational park located in the heart of Orion Township, near Lake Orion, Michigan, at 1301 Clarkston Road. Originally established in 1918 as a Boy Scout camp under the name Camp Pontiac, it was renamed Camp Agawam in 1933 and served generations of scouts. Today, it’s managed by Orion Township Parks and Recreation and has evolved into a public park offering a wide range of activities for all ages.
The park is situated on the south side of Clarkston Road, between Joslyn Road and M-24, and features a mix of natural beauty and developed amenities. At its core is Tommy’s Lake, a private 42-acre lake with a sandy beach that was nearly doubled in size during a 2023 expansion, creating a designated swimming area. The park also boasts numerous campsites, rental facilities (like Peterson Lodge and pavilions), walking trails, a chapel, a state-of-the-art playground built in 2018, and a disc golf course. Its wooded areas provide a “wild yet tamed” escape within suburban surroundings, making it a popular spot for hiking, camping, and family outings.
Camp Agawam connects to Orion Township’s growing pathway system, allowing pedestrians and cyclists to access it from downtown Lake Orion, nearby neighborhoods, and even the Polly Ann and Paint Creek Trails via a pedestrian crosswalk near Elkhorn Lake. The park hosts events like Tommystock, an annual music festival benefiting the Friends of Camp Agawam nonprofit, which helps maintain and improve the property. With its blend of nature—think vernal ponds, wetlands, and wildlife like pileated woodpeckers—and modern facilities, it’s pitched as a “picturesque park in the middle of suburban life,” living up to its slogan, “Come Get Lost in Nature at Camp Agawam.”
